LUR Garden is a 20,0000 square meter garden that has been built over 10+ years by its owners Iñigo Segurola & Juan Inarte. Segurola and Inarte, dedicated stewards of this lush haven have organized the garden into 16 unique thematic spaces. The garden sits adjacent to the owner’s landscape design studio, LUR Paisajistak.
The adjoining and vast garden has been a testing place for the owners to experiment with different garden and landscape design concepts. Now that the garden has ¨expressed its fullness,¨ as Segurola explained to us, the team has relished in opening the doors of the garden to the public and is proud to share their achievements and learnings with curious visitors.
A visit to the property and a tour with Segurola is an aesthetic feast and unique encounter with nature for those who make the drive to Oiartzun. Once on the property, it’s impossible to not be immediately taken by the lush landscape and evident passion the owners have for beauty and gardening. The natural beauty of colors, textures, and variety of plants is a sprawling slice of heaven and breathtaking in its aesthetic.
The garden itself is modeled after the shape of an egg, and within the sprawling space visitors can explore distinct themes and a range of gardens. We particularly love the hydrangea garden, the collection of succulents, as well as the mirror garden which is a space of calm and tranquility set against a pond. The 25 meters long elliptical shaped pond reflects the sky and surrounding foliage and was described to us as the main protagonist of the garden. Ponds are reflective, serene, and beautiful, and it’s easy to tap into an immediate sense of zen when visiting the oasis that is LUR.
LUR is studded with unique plant species and over 1,800 beech trees. Visitors will notice how things grow freely but are clearly well-maintained by the owners. LUR garden is a playful and thoughtful exploration of the connection between water, an essential resource in the Basque Country, and the necessary role it plays in giving life to living things, especially the most beautiful ones.
How to visit
LUR opens its doors to the public on certain months and days of the year, and reservations are required to visit. You can find more information on bookings at their website. We do recommend signing up for the guided tour led by Iñigo himself. If you seek a solo adventure, that’s available to visitors, too. Allow for at least 60-90 minutes to properly explore the garden.
Limited space for upcoming dates can be reserved here.
Also, there is accessible, flat access to the garden for those with reduced mobility, and visitors are allowed to enter the garden with their pets, if they are tied, as cats live on the LUR property.
