Rioja Small Producers: Masterclass and Boutique Winery Visit

Sip rare wines from up-and-coming winemakers in Mikel’s historic house, taste amazing bottles at a family-run boutique winery and wander the cobbled streets of Laguardia. End the day feasting on smoky lamb chops and local treats at a cozy mesón. This isn’t just a tour—it’s a hidden gem waiting to be uncovered!

Laguardia, the Name of the Rose

Our journey begins in the picturesque hilltop village of Laguardia, where medieval charm meets breathtaking views. With its cobblestone streets, almond-shaped urban layout, ancient walls, and an intricate network of tunnels once used as wineries.

Mikel’s House

Next, we’ll step inside one of Laguardia’s oldest houses, dating back to the Middle Ages, for a truly masterclass wine experience. Our host, Mikel, opens his doors to introduce us to the world of small Rioja producers—the future stars of the region. This is no ordinary tasting. Through their exceptional wines, Mikel will guide us in understanding the vision and craft of these young winemakers, many of whom are his friends, who bring a fresh perspective to Rioja’s wine scene.

You’ll taste rare and hard-to-find bottles while Mikel shares the stories behind the producers, their travels, and how they express Rioja’s richness and diversity through their wines. All this takes place in a space brimming with history, featuring a stone fermentation tank where wine has been made for over five centuries.

Luis Cañas Winery

After this, we’ll head to Luis Cañas Winery, one of Rioja Alavesa’s most iconic family-run wineries. Known for its dedication to quality and its sustainable winemaking practices, Luis Cañas produces wines that perfectly balance tradition and modernity. Here, we’ll enjoy a tasting of their finest wines, showcasing the essence of Rioja Alavesa and the passion of four generations of winemaking excellence.

Welcome to a Typical Mesón

To top it all off, we’ll enjoy a hearty meal at a traditional mesón, a cozy, no-frills spot where comfort food shines. Expect dishes like white asparagus, cured meats, smoky lamb chops grilled over sarmiento, and for the adventurous, local blood sausage. Paired with excellent local wine and finished with Goxua, a creamy dessert, it’s simple, hearty, and unforgettable.

This tour is a celebration of Rioja’s small producers, historic charm, and timeless flavors—a perfect day for wine lovers and foodies alike!
