LUR Garden: a unique garden near San Sebastián

By Ania

LUR Garden is a 20,0000 square meter garden in Oiartzun, just a short drive from San Sebastián, created over more than a decade by landscape designers Iñigo Segurola and Juan Inarte. The garden is divided into 16 unique thematic spaces, each offering a different perspective on plants, water, landscape and design.

Located next to the owner's landscape design studio, LUR Paisajistik, the garden began as a place to experiment with ideas and explore different approaches to landscape design. Today, it has become a remarkable garden open to visitors looking for a peaceful and inspiring experience surrounded by nature.

A garden shaped by landscape design

The garden was originally conceived as a testing ground for the owner's landscape design ideas. Over the years, the different spaces evolved naturally as Segurola and Inarte experimented with plants, water, textures and forms.

Now that the garden has reached what Segurola described as its "fullness", the owners have opened this private landscape to visitors, offering an opportunity to experience the ideas and lessons developed throughout more than ten years of work.

Exploring LUR Garden in Oiartzun

A visit to LUR Garden is as much an aesthetic experience as it is an encounter with nature. The garden is located in Oiartzun, surrounded by the green landscape of the Basque Country, and its different spaces reveal themselves as you move through the property.

The visitors are immediately surrounded by an impressive variety of colors, textures and plan species. What initially feels wild and spontaneous is, in fact, the result of careful landscape design and years of observation and maintenance.

Thematic gardens and the mirror pond

The garden follows and unusual egg-shaped layout, with 16 distinct thematic spaces spread throughout the property. Each area has it own character, allowing visitors to experience different approaches to planting landscape design.

Among our favorite spaces are the hydrangea garden, the succulent collection and the mirror garden. The latter is particularly peaceful, centered around a 25-meter-long elliptical pond that reflects the sky and surrounding vegetation.

Segurola describes the pond as the main protagonist of the garden, and it is easy to understand why. Water brings a sense of calm and stillness to the space while creating a constantly changing reflection of the landscape around it.

Plants, water and the Basque landscape

LUR Garden is home to remarkable variety of plant species, as well as more than 1,800 beech trees. Although the vegetation appears to grow freely, the garden is carefully maintained, creating a balance between controlled landscape design and the natural characterof the Basque environment.

Water is another central element throughout LUR. The garden explores the relationship between water and plants, highlighting the essential role this resource plays in the landscape of the Basque Country. Ponds, vegetation and open spaces come together to create an environment that feels both carefully designed and wonderfully alive.
