When is the best time to come to San Sebastián?

By Mattin

The easy answer would be summer. Long days, beaches, terraces... But ask someone local and the answer gets a little more complicated. San Sebastián changes a lot throughout the year, and that is a big part of its charm.

Perhaps there is no single best time to come to San Sebastián. It depends on which version of Donostia you want to meet.

We’ve picked some of the moments that shape the year for us.

When green takes over the Basque Country

In Spring

Spring has a different kind of energy here. The trees get their leaves back, the days stretch a little longer, and plans slowly move outdoors again, although an umbrella is rarely a bad idea.

It is also the final part of the traditional cider season, and a good moment to experience a sagardotegi. Follow the shout of txotx! to the kupela, our huge wooden barrels and taste the new cider straight from them. Don’be surprised if the meal ends with everyone singing around the table. A sagardotegi is as much about gathering around the table as it is about the cider itself. It is loud, social and very Basque.

Spring also brings one of our favourite products back to the coast: fresh anchovies. You start seeing them on market stalls and menus, and they are one of those simple reminders that here, the seasons also arrive through the plate.

In Summer

Summer moves much of Donostia outdoors. Evenings stretch later, beaches stay busy well into the afternoon and the last surfers often leave Zurriola as the light begins to change.

July brings Jazzaldia, when music takes over the city and some concerts take place right by the beach, with the sea just a few metres away. A few weeks later, Semana Grande fills the nights with fireworks and that unmistakable summer atmosphere.

And then there are the traineras. Throughout the summer, traditional rowing races known as estropadak bring towns along the Basque coast together, with supporters following their crews from port to port with supporters following their crews from port to port, and coastal rivalries becoming considerably more serious for a few hours . As summer comes to an end, the legendary Bandera de la Concha turns San Sebastián Bay into one of the most exciting places to be.

When the landscape, and the table, begin to change

In Autumn

Autumn changes the mood. The hills and vineyards turn gold, red and orange, chestnut stalls start appearing in the streets, and the air feels a little cooler.

September is harvest time in Rioja (don’t miss our Rioja wine tours!), when the vineyards are at their busiest and the landscape begins to change with the harvest. It is also when San Sebastián welcomes the Zinemaldia, the San Sebastian Film Festival, bringing filmmakers, actors and cinema lovers from all over the world.

And as autumn settles in, seasonal products start taking over markets and menus too. Heading into the countryside early in the morning to look for mushrooms, followed by a long lunch, feels like exactly the right kind of plan, particularly when the weather gives you a convincing reason not to hurry home.

When the city beats to its own rhythm

In Winter

Winter brings out some of Donostia’s strongest traditions. On December 21st, Santo Tomás turns much of the centre into a rural market with people in traditional dress, the smell of txistorra cooking in the streets and freshly made talo everywhere.

Then comes January 20th. For 24 hours, the sound of drums and barrels fills every neighbourhood during the Tamborrada. From midnight to midnight, thousands of people take to the streets to celebrate San Sebastián Day. It is difficult to understand just how much the city lives this day until you are here.

But then, when is the best time to come?

The Donostia you experience in January is quite different from the one you find in July. Some of that comes from the weather, but just as much comes from what people are eating, celebrating and doing at that particular moment of the year.

Maybe that is why choosing the best time to come to San Sebastián is not a simple task. It is really about finding the side of Donostia best fits the way you like to travel.

At Ikusnahi, as an agency of basque country private tours, that is how we prefer to think about the question. Rather than looking for the “perfect” month, it is about matching the season with the experience you are looking for. Donostia is not quite the same city in January as it is in July, and we would not really want it to be.
