A true delight for any wine enthusiast who is visiting Basque Country and doesn’t want to miss the opportunity to dive into the complex and fascinating world of the premium quality wines during a full-day trip to the charming region of Bordeaux.
WHAT TO EXPECT
We will pick you up early in the morning and begin a 2,5 hour drive to Saint-Émilion. Don’t worry the time will fly! During the journey your guide will give you an introduction of the history of the region, wine and local traditions. We will also find time for a coffee & croissant break.
Saint-Émilion is a petit but incredibly picturesque town and UNESCO site in one – a real gem for wine, food and architecture lovers. We will stroll down the cobblestone lanes breathing in the romantic atmosphere of this perfectly preserved medieval village to finally stop in a spectacular family-run ‘château’ which winemaking traditions date back to the 17th century. Here we will take time to explore the impressive buildings, vineyards and taste three, Grand Cru Classé wines.
Next we’ll sneak you into the back-office of a wine store and winery that belongs to a local family who devoted their life to understand wine from the region. There are around 60 (!) appellations that spread out on both banks of the rivers Garonne, Dordogne and Gironde. Over 10 000 different wines are produced here every year! And there is no better way to discover this diverse wine country then through a private, interactive class and wine tasting with a sommelier. You will try five, high quality wines from different Bordeaux AOCs.
Armed with new knowledge on the intricacies of Bordeaux wine we will head to an excellent restaurant surrounded by vineyards – a place where the limestone walls of historic ‘château’ turn into raw and modern glass construction. The French have a real sense of terroir and their typical dishes rely heavily on local products. No difference here! You will have the opportunity to savour a four-course, seasonal market menu paired with three, local wines.
By the end of the day you will have discovered home to the oldest fine-wine vineyards in the world and tasted some of the premium quality wine that best represent local appellations.
Now it’s time to head back to our lovely San Sebastian!
